1. How long do the API solar systems last?

API solar modules have a power output warranty of 25 years and cause very little trouble. They have no moving parts to wear out. You can read some current info on solar panel longevity here at CleanTechnica. The motors in the brush-style pumps have a 5,000 hour rating. The motors in the new brushless motor pumps have a 20,000 hour rating.

If the water level shut-off is used to shut off the pump when the tank is full, hours of runtime are saved on the motor, extending pump life. We have customers who have run our solar pumps for more than 10 years without maintenance. Water quality and a proper installation are key factors in how long the pumps will last. If there is no weep hole installed in a well, where freezing temps can occur, the pump can be ruined. If the pumps are placed in sandy or dirty wells, premature wear is inevitable.

2. How much are repair costs?

API solar pumps are factory rebuildable. Depending on the wear on the pump parts and the style of pump, you could spend between $300-$500 for a rebuild.

3. How does hail affect the solar panels?

The solar panels are rated to endure a 1-inch hail stone at 80 miles per hour. The tilt angles of the panels allow them to take glancing blows rather than direct hits. In nearly 40 years of selling these solar pump systems, and with thousands of systems in the field, we only know of a handful of panels broken by hail. They have weathered many hail storms and are extremely durable.

We always recommend that you add these solar systems to your farm and ranch insurance policy. Estimates suggest a cost of no more than $20 per year, but consult with your insurance agent for exact costs.

4. Do I need batteries to operate an API solar pump system?

No. All of our API spolar pump systems less than 520 watts are designed to operate with direct solar. However, they can be operated via batteries if needed for on-demand use.

5. Does API offer a pump for three inch I.D. wells?

We do have a small shallow well pump designed for small wells (less than 25' lift). It is for temporary use only, but is great for emergencies. It will also pump diesel fuel and is available in 12vdc or 24vdc. We are also currently in development of a helical (PC) style solar pump, hopefully available soon.

6. Can the solar modules be mounted on the rooftop?

Yes, but be certain your roof structure is designed for the added weight of the system chosen. It is a more complicated installation than our supplied top-of-pole mounts. Also, be certain there are no shadows that will be on the panels at any time throughout the peak sunlight hours, as shadows will greatly reduce solar system output.

7. Can API pumps be used in acidic wells?

API solar pumps are designed for neutral pH. Higher and lower values could possibly corrode components. Have your well tested or pick up a do-it-yourself kit from vendors, like pool companies. We have built custom pumps designed for acidic wells when our customers have no other choice.

8. Can API pumping systems supply enough water for my home?

Yes they can! API solar pumps can supply up to 2000 gallons per 24 hours, depending on lift, with our API aluminum pumps. 9. Can I use your solar pump for my irrigation?

Yes! We specialize in custom systems, customers have used our solar water pumps for small garden irrigation up to large field irrigation for crops. Our pumps can run from 0.5 HP up to 73 HP, providing maximum of 2500 GPM.

10. How does solar PV panels work?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels converts sunlight directly to electricity (DC or Direct Current). Your solar panel will be most efficient in your locations peak sunlight hours. Sunlight hitting the surface of a cell knocks electrons loose, which then travel through a circuit from one larger to the other, providing a flow of electricity.

11. Can I use my solar pump for salt water applications?

Yes! API's Merlin3 Series is a stainless steel solar pump which can be used for salt water use. Please let us know beforehand that you will be using it in a salt water application so we can properly prep the solar pump for that application.

12. I don't have a well, but would like to pull water from my pond or creek. Can I use your pump?

Absolutely, API has sold many systems for similar applications. Just be sure your pond or creek can keep up with your desired water demand. Freezing issues may arise if improperly installed. We also advise you to encase the solar pump in a filtration box or float the pump to ensure it is not pumping debris from the bottom of the water source. This can cause your pump to wear down fast and lead to repairs. For more information on this type of application please contact us.

13. I just built a pond, can I use your solar pump to fill it or maintain fresh water?

We love pumping water to ponds! We can provide up to 2500 GPM and can pump as deep as 800 feet. API has sized many systems for fishing ponds, frac ponds, and newly built ponds for homes, farms, oilfield use, and more. To get started contact one of our system specialists.

14. My well or storage tank is in a valley surrounded by trees, can I still use solar?

Yes, we advise you to relocate you solar panels uphill so they are in direct sunlight. Our solar pumps can come with 100' of pump wire, however we have additional lengths available, allowing you to purchase up to several hundred feet. We also have water sensor wire up to 1500' available to purchase.
